Students who need to meet with their counselors should sign their names on their respective counselor's sign-up sheet at the front counter in the Guidance Office. Your counselor will then send you a pass for either later that day or the following day. Your counselor is also available before and after school. Your parents may meet with your counselor by calling and making an appointment.
  • Academic Counseling. Students often have problems in their classes because of student habits, teacher expectations, grading systems, and time management. Your counselor may assist you in finding solutions to many of these problems.
  • Career Counseling. Although the counseling program at Elgin High School includes career investigation and information, students are encouraged to request additional personal assistance in career planning.
  • Personal Counseling. When students are faced with conflicts or crises in their lives, they have the opportunity to meet with counselors who are skilled and experienced in helping others find solution to their problems.
  • Testing. Throughout your four years at Elgin High School, you will be offered the opportunity to take several tests. Each test has a purpose and can be very useful in opportunity to take several tests. Each test has a purpose and can be very useful in helping your counselor, your parents, and you make your education more meaningful. Information about the tests will be given to you in meetings with your counselor. During your Freshman year you will take the Test of Achievement and Proficiency (TAP). All Sophomores will take the PLAN, a college entrance preparatory test and interest inventory.
  • Homework Assignments. If you are absent from school for three or more days, your parents may request your homework assignments by contacting your counselor.
  • Referral Services. Your school district provides many supportive services which may be recommended by a counselor. Supportive personnel employed by the school district include a school nurse, social worker, psychologist, and speech therapist. You may request the use of these services through your counselor. Information about community referral services may also be obtained from your counselor upon request of a student or his parents.
  • Career / Library Information. The books and materials available in the guidance office and library will help you in making decisions about your career choices and your educational plans following high school. Students are encouraged to spend time in the library research career information during study halls or commons periods. A Guidance Information Service program is available in the computer lab for students to do career searches and college / vocational school searches.

  • Available During the School Day

Core Academic Resource Program (CARP) Math, English, or Science teachers are available to provide tutoring in the library throughout the school day to assist with classroom work. Students may attend during their study hall or lunch periods.

Fresh Start Program
The Fresh Start Program is designed to provide academic and social support for students. As well as to keep students in school and address any issues that would prevent them from graduating.Students may participate during their study hall or lunch periods in room 116.
 
Freshmen Tutors
This program is designed to help freshman academically in their English and Math classes. An English tutor and a Math tutor are available to help with classroom coursework. Location will be in Library 2 classroom.
 
Juniors PSAE Tutorial
This program is designed to improve student's PSAE test scores.  Identified juniors are assigned through the guidance office in the spring semester of their sophomore year based on PLAN/Practice PSAE test score data.
 
  • After School Help for All
Homework Club
Meets Monday - Thursday in the EHS library from 3 - 5pm. Any student may attend to work on homework assignments. An activity bus is available at 5:05 and will transport students to a U-46 school site closest to their home.
 
Gail Borden Public Library Online Homework Help
Assistance with homework is available via “Help Now” by Brain Fuse* (Free Gail Borden Public Library online homework help) in all subjects in addition to volunteer student peer tutors.

  • Parent Help
Our students should come prepared to school everyday with their coursework, textbooks, and writing materials in their backpacks. Students are more successful if they are organized with their subject's coursework, notes, and required materials.
 
If your child is having trouble with class work, please feel free to the contact the teacher via phone or email. Most often, communication between teacher, parent, and student allows for the educational process to ensue and resolves any questions that may exist. 
 
If upon conferring with the classroom teacher your child continues to struggle with more than just class work, please be sure to contact their Guidance Counselor or Dean.
