Bits & Pieces…
10th Year Anniversary…
Our birthday Fall Fest was great. Everyone had fun. This benchmark was a success thanks to the hard work, coordination and collaboration between our dedicated PTO and our staff. Thanks to everyone involved in the planning of our anniversary. We will continue to strive for academic success.
The DuPage County Health Dept. is offering the H1N1 vaccine to anyone 2-49 years of age and it is free. They are now taking appointments. You do not have to be a DuPage resident to get it unlike Kane's clinics. They even have appointments on Sundays. The hotline appt. number is 1.866.311.1123 and the web address is www.protectdupage.com.
Also.. it is crucial that you call the school every day if your child is going to be absent. We need an explanation of the illness. We also need copy of the Dr’s. note, if the child goes to the doctor.
Parent / Teacher Conferences… are coming up
11/18- Evening Conferences
11/19 - Afternoon Conferences
11/24- Morning Conferences
The 11/24 is the general U-46 District conference date.
Please call or email your child's teacher if you have not yet scheduled a conference time.
Curriculum is everybody’s business…
It is important for parents to be active participants in their children education. Active participation can include assisting with homework, getting involved with academic projects, but it also means helping your child making connections between the school work and current events, taking your child to the museum or to see a play, among others.
The following is important information that you need to know about your child’s curriculum:
Making Meaning is the product used for Reading Comprehension
Being a Writer is the complement to the balanced literacy program
The school uses Leveled Books from to supplement literacy development
Everyday Math is the product we use to develop math skills. The product was
developed by the University of Chicago and the main characteristic of the
program is the spiral approach which allows students to review previously
learned skills throughout the academic year.
FOSS is the district adopted curriculum to learn and apply the science
standards. This product provides pre-packed kits of materials to apply the
theoretical concepts learned about a particular theme. Each grade has four
modules/themes to cover based on the state standards.
We encourage parents to join their kid’s fun while providing a helping hand during lab time. It is easier to do science with additional adult supervision.
I am happy to announce that our “Café” is running smoothly.
Our students and lunch supervisors are doing a pretty good job managing the 45 minutes allowed by the school district for lunch and recess. The 45 minute timeframe is attached to the teachers’ lunch time as allowed by their contract.
District-wide students have lunch and recess, plus line-up three times within the same 45 minutes. Unless there is a change in teacher contract lunch time, our students’ lunch itinerary will remain the same.
Our library needs support…
We need assistance to classify several boxes of books, shelve other and catalog several hundred more!!! Please let us know if you have 1-2 hours per month so we can have more books available for our students in the near future. If 1 parent per room volunteers 1-2 hours for the next three months we will be done by March. Your children and the staff will be very grateful.
90 minutes a day can go a long way for our kids…
Balanced literacy requires a block of whole group mini-lesson, guided reading, independent reading and writing. Some classroom schedules allow them to have 90 consecutive minutes, while others divide their literacy block. Differentiated instruction is partially accomplish through small group instruction. Teachers and students can benefit from your help. You can join a classroom as a “buddy reader” Please contact your child’s teacher to arrange your assistance.
Technology inquiry…
Your child’s teachers are trying to make meaningful connections between theory and practice through project-based instruction and technology. However, technology is expensive; therefore we need to identify corporate sponsors willing to donate smart boards.
To learn more about smart boards and how you can help us bring distance learning to our classrooms, call or email Ms. Concepcion. In addition to smart boards, we are looking at furnish each classroom with two-three computers.
