High Scope Curriculum What is the High/Scope Educational Approach?*
The High/Scope educational approach is a set of guiding principles and practices that adults follow as they work with and care for young children. These guidelines are intended to be an open framework that allows teams of adults to adapt to the special needs of the children in their classroom. Active learning is a central belief of this framework. The High/Scope educational approach assumes that children learn when they are actively engage and involved in interactions with people and materials in their environment.
How do children learn in a High/Scope setting?*
Children in a High/Scope classroom are encouraged to make choices about materials and activities throughout their day. As they pursue their choices and plans, children explore, ask and answer questions, solve problems and interact with classmates and adults. In this type of environment, children engage in “key experiences” that foster their development. High/Scope has identified 58 key experiences for the preschool years (see attached list). These key experiences are grouped into 10 categories: creative representation, language and literacy, initiative and social relations, movement, music, classification, seriation, number, space, and time.

Illinois Early Learning Standards The Illinois Early Learning Standards were developed by the Illinois State Board of Education. We use these standards in conjunction with the High/Scope key experiences to ensure a well-rounded educational experience and to assess each child’s progress throughout the year. For more information about the Illinois Early Learning Standards, please visit the website at illinoisearlylearning.org/standards
Throughout the year, your child's teacher will collect samples of your child’s work in our classroom and assemble them into a portfolio. The samples collected will demonstrate how your child has met some of the Illinois Early Learning Standards. Your child's teacher will collect samples across the following domains: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Physical Development & Health, Fine Arts, and Social/Emotional Development.
You will have the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher for a conference. During that time, the teacher will review the contents of your child’s portfolio with you. At the end of the year, you will be able to take your child’s portfolio home with you.
