INDEPENDENT, SELF-PACED STUDY

  • Peterson’s StudentEdge. Larkin High School is pleased to announce that Peterson’s StudentEdge is available for all high school students. StudentEdge is a free online resource center that simplifies college and career planning by putting everything you need in one location. You have access to test preparation, college searches, a scholarship search, financial aid tools, a career assessment, and a resume builder. Students will also get a personalized to do list that will guide them through the planning process. Even 9th grade students can get a head start on college and career prep with the online practice tests and career assessment. You can access StudentEdge by going to www.mystudentedge.com. First time users should enter CBRCYHQH for the access code.
    • Don't become confused with the access code.  Just sign-up and start using this service!  The test preparation is FREE and robust.  Similar programs are running into the 100's of dollars.
    • If you are confused with the sign-up, then contact a teacher or counselor to get signed up and start preparing immediately!
  • ACT COMPANY. (www.actstudent.org) - Here you will find practice test questions and suggestions for studying for the exam. If the student wants to take the ACT more than once, this is where you register. This is also the website students use to request that their test scores be sent to prospective colleges.
  • ACT Online Prep. (www.actonlineprep.com) – This is an online prep created by the makers of the test. There are two practice tests and one diagnostic test which provide students with a study path. Bartlett High School students have free access at least until July 2009. See your Guidance Counselor for user ID and password. Individual licenses are $19.95 per year.
  • Streamwood High School’s Online Practice Modules for ACT and WorkKeys that features hundreds of practice questions.http://schools.u-46.org/index.pl?id=8902
  • Test Guides. You can find a number of study guides with practice tests at your local bookstore or online book seller such as amazon.com. Some titles include: Kaplan’s ACT - also available at (www.kaptest.com) and The Real ACT Prep Guide (also available at www.petersons.com).
  • Software. Your book seller also carries software programs with practice tests, such as those published by Kaplan. Priced from $20 - $40. 

CLASSES AND TUTORING

  • Revolution Prep. (www.revolutionprep.com or 877-REV-PREP). This is a private company that offers a free free Mock ACT (Bartlett High School dates to be announced) and a comprehensive ACT prep course to be held at Bartlett High School. The class cost is about $500. There are early enrollment discounts and some financial aid available.
  • TestWatch-Test Prep. (www.TWTP.com or 847-496-7070) This private company offers evening classes at Bartlett High School for both ACT and SAT test prep. The classes meet twice a week for six weeks several times throughout the year. Course fees are $329.00.
  • Elgin Community College. (http://elgin.edu/noncreditclasses.aspx or 847-697-1000). ECC offers a non-credit course on six consecutive Saturdays for $199. They use the Cambridge Educational Services “Six-Step Approach” which includes pre and post-testing, basic skills review and test taking strategies.
  • One-on-one or small group tutoring. In addition to group courses, many companies offer private tutoring for those who prefer one-on-one instruction. Tutors can be found locally through companies such as Revolution Prep (see above), A-Plus Learning (630-837-2227), Kumon (630-540-9771), Club Z (630-283-2928), Huntington (800-CAN LEARN), Tutoring Club of Bartlett (630-392-8886) and many others. This is the priciest option. Choose carefully and check credentials.

ONLINE DIRECTED STUDY

  • Online ACT courses. These are for students who have convenient computer access and are serious about dedicating time to prepare. Some options include: Illinois Virtual High School (a six-week course, ivhs.org), Princeton Review (www.princetonreview.com), and Kaplan (www.kaptest.com). Fees from $225 - $300+.

  • Test Prep Review.  This site offers preparation on a vast array of tests.  Including help in reviewing for college graduate entrance exams.
