Lisa briefly discussed event plans for the 2010/2011 School year (i.e. events and volunteers). We will need parents to help with Curriculum/ Bingo Night, the Book Fair, and Reading/Math Night. Lisa also announced that we may have an Opening Ceremony on the first day of school to begin the school year. More details will be coming.
Anna asked that current room reps continue to share information from the PTO (as needed) over the summer to maintain communications with parents. The PTO requests parents update and/or provide an e-mail address for summer communications.
During the next school year we will continue to utilize the room reps to keep parents connected. We will also be sending out a monthly newsletter, and will hopefully be posting it on Lincoln’s website. The PTO will also be sending parents an agenda before each meeting, so they will know the topics that will be covered. Parents are welcome to submit any issues that they would like to discuss. The Monday after each PTO meeting, the meeting minutes will be posted. The PTO will also be using Lincoln’s phone alert system to remind parents of events. Lisa also mentioned that there is a Facebook page started by parents called Parents for Lincoln Elementary School.
Dr. Alyea welcomed parents into the school both during school, and for events, parent involvement is critical for the students. She announced that the classroom configurations for 2010-11 have not changed since the update last month. There has been a surge in multi-age classrooms for next year. Also, the mobiles outside of the school will not be used for classrooms next year. Members of the Citizens’ Advisory Council are working with the school district to see if they can be used for art and music rooms. Dr. Alyea also briefly discussed teacher/staff updates for 2010-11 year; there are some staff members that will not be returning. There are some positions that have not been filled yet; Dr. Alyea will not be giving out room/teacher assignments to parents at this time.
Members of the Citizens’ Advisory Council (CAC) gave us an Update.
The boundary changes that the CAC believes would solve our capacity issues are still on hold. Some of the CAC members as well as other Lincoln parents attended the last school board meeting, and voiced their concerns. There are additional school board meetings on June 7th and June 21st. The school board is looking into other options to alleviate the overcrowding, such as moving the 6th grade to self contained class rooms at Larsen. The CAC recommends that parents who are concerned about this issue should email or write to the school board or attend an upcoming school board meeting. Each person is allowed to speak to the board for up to three minutes; the CAC suggests addressing how the overcrowding is affecting your child. For example, the lunch times are too short for your child to eat their lunch. If parents do not wish to speak, they can come for support and to show the board that many Lincoln parents are concerned.
