Family Welcome Center

The change in the demographics of classrooms in United States schools reflects the diversification of the population and mirrors the multicultural society in which we live. This change in the makeup of society has a deep effect on the communities and an immeasurable impact on the schools. It provides an additional challenge for educators and the entire educational system to educate children new to American education and help them develop to become full and active members of our society.

School District U-46 believes that all children deserve the opportunity to develop and to grow. We also believe their families need support and guidance to successfully integrate into American society so they can be a part of their children’s academic success.

Having this responsibility in mind, U-46 opened the door of the Family Welcome Center in October 2005 to address the educational needs of our new arrivals - both the students and their families.

In 2007 the services of the Welcome Center were expanded to include assessment of ALL incoming kindergarteners. Students are screened at their home school or at the Family Welcome Center. This process helps determine the best placement for young students.

The U-46 Welcome Center works hard to meet the needs of all the children they work with.
