The 2009 Larsen Cup Tournament-Last Team Standing

Despite the unexpected arrival of severe weather, The 2009 Larsen Cup golf tournament was held Friday, September 25th at The Wing Park Golf Course in Elgin. After a discussion about postponing the event, the Golf Committee decided it would be unlikely, given the shortening fall days, that the tournament could be held later this year. Roughly one-third of the entrants elected not to play in the rain, but three teams of three teed off in the third installment of the annual event. In the end, the team of John Laubhan, Raquel Castilho and Alicia Andrade were the victors, carding a one over par 37 for nine holes. The team of John Kelley, Scott Kelly and Charron Banaszak tied for second place with the team of Rich Olivarez, Dave Ziliak and Mark. Neither team's score could be absolutely confirmed due to scorecard water damage, but both completed six holes before fleeing the worsening conditions. The Women's longest putt was won by Castilho, while the Men's longest was carded by Laubhan. Longest Women's Drive was hit by Charron Banaszak and the Men's boomer belonged to John Kelley. Laubhan also took the closest to the pin prize on number nine. Castilho won the drawing for the custom three-wood at the post-tourney celebration.

In a post-tournament interview, Laubhan said, "I'm very proud of our team. The weather was like a Hemingway novel. Gale-force winds, downpours. We think we saw a waterspout over the pond on number six, which we birdied. It's a miracle we finished."

The victorious team is all smiles after surviving the perfect storm.
