Larsen Student Earns State Award
While the science fair at the Gail Borden Library was news a few weeks ago, one U-46 student is still making news with her science project. In February, Larsen Middle School held their first annual science fair for the students in the gifted program (SWAS). Three projects were chosen to proceed to the Regional Science Fair at Northern Illinois University. At the Regional Science Fair, Jessica Rusick won “Best in Category” for her project, How do different fertilizers affect the growth of basil plants?
Jessica advanced to the state science fair at University of Illinois sponsored by the Illinois Junior Academy of Science on May 8. At state, Jessica received a Gold Award for her oral presentation, written research paper, and visual display. Teachers at Larsen report “Jessica is a student with a heart of gold and a young woman with a bright future.”
LAST SECOND EAGLE CLINCHES COMEBACK VICTORY
The 2010 Larsen Masters golf tournament produced what may be it's most exciting finish ever on Friday, May 14th, as Team Laubhan eagled the final hole to overcome a one-shot deficit and win the coveted green jacket for the third time in four years. "We refused to give up," said Alicia Andrade in a post-event interview, moments before receiving her jacket. "We knew we could come back and win at the wire."
Team Laubhan, with John, Alicia and Sharon Banaszak, finished with a two under par 35 on the challenging wind-swept front nine at Villa Olivia Country Club. "This course played like a major," commented Laubhan at the gala following the victory. "I told everyone beforehand even par would win today. Everyone played great in very strong wind."
Team Olivarez, with Rich and big brother, Dan, and Larsen golf hustler John Kelley, finished second at minus one 36. In third place this year, was Team Hodges with Randy, Perry Hayes and son Collin, and Joyce Juenger, with a solid one over 38.
The event was moved to Villa Olivia at the last moment after flooding closed the usual venue, Wing Park Golf Course. "I enjoyed the switch," said Dr. Hodges. "We should look into returning here next year."
This year's individual achievements were as follows: Closest to the Pin/Dan Olivarez, Longest Women's Drive and Longest Women's Putt/Joyce Juenger (Ellis), and Longes Men's Drive and Longest Men's Putt/John Laubhan.
