Welcome to the Kenyon Woods Environmental Club!
Mrs. Cebulski, Mr. Chase, and Mrs. Kielbasa will continue with the environmental club for the 2009-2010 school year. We meet every other Monday starting Septmber 14, 2009.
Please help us beautify our courtyard. We are looking for donations of newspapers to smother the weeds and give the plants a chance to grow. Bring in you old newspapers, no glossy ads please, to Mr. Chase, Mrs. Cebulski, or Mrs. Kielbasa.
During the first year for the Environmental Club, our goal was to create a greener environment at Kenyon Woods. The group met every other Monday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in room C-151. Here are some of the activities from this year:
One of the projects the Environmental Club initiated this year is the Tap-N-Stack program in the lunchroom. The club members presented the programs during all lunch period in Janurary. This is a garbage reduction and recyling program. The students tap the food off of their styrofoam trays and stack them neatly, which takes up less space in the garbage. The students also recycle bottles, cans, paper, and other items. By implementing the program we have cut the amount of garbage leaving our lunch room by 40-50%. This not only helps the custodial staff, but most importantly helps the envirnoment by using less landfill space.
This activity was submitted to the state for the Green Kids Award. The students received an Honorable Mention from the state.

Another activity the club has participated in was snow shoeing. We borrowed snow shoes from the James "Pate" Philip State Park and show shoed around the school. While outside, the club members saw various animals tracks as well as scat. We also spotted about seven or eight deer in the woods and were able to watch as they foraged for food. Afterwards, we warmed up with hot cocoa and snacks.
Check out the courtyard right outside the commons. Thanks to all the volunteers who donated plants and money. We were able to purchase ove 250 plant and during July, Mrs. Cebulski and Mrs. Kielbasa were able to get them planted. We will continue with beautifying the courtyard in the fall and next spring.
