U-46 offers a dual-language program at Channing School. In this program native English-speaking and native Spanish-speaking children are in the same class and instruction is provided in both languages. The goal of the program is for students to develop language proficiency in two languages.

The Newcomers Program is designed for students who are new to the country and who are limited English proficient in grades 3-6.

Transitional Bilingual Education
The program helps students to succeed in academic subjects and learn English. The classes count toward graduation requirements. The program is designed to allow ELL students to successfully perform at their ability level while they learn English and transition into English only classes. Academic instruction in all required subjects areas is provided in the student’s first language while they learn English. The instructional goal of the program is to meet academic achievement standards for grade promotion and to become proficient in English.
This program is offered to students who speak Spanish in grades K through 12 in self contained classes. At the middle and high school levels all courses required for graduation are offered in Spanish, English as a Second Language and/or in English to meet the linguistic needs of this population.

The program provides support to help students succeed in academic subjects and learn English. The classes count toward graduation requirements. The self contained class allows students to focus on developing English and educational concepts appropriate for their ability at their language level throughout the school day. The methodology of English instruction focuses on language development through meaningful experiences. A complete sequence of ESL classes and options are offered at the secondary level to give students academic opportunities. The ten language groups most often represented in this program are: Polish, Lao, Philippine, Urdu, Italian, Gujarati, Korean, German and Vietnamese

The Dual Language / Two-Way Immersion Program is provided to develop ELL students’ fluency and literacy in English and in their native language. This program is offered at Channing Elementary School and Ellis Middle School in self-contained classes in grades K through 7. The program helps children to develop strong skills and proficiency in two languages, English and Spanish. The district offers a 50 / 50 program: 50% English speaking students plus 50% Spanish speaking students with 50% English instruction, and 50% Spanish instruction.

Newcomers Program
Those students who qualify for Newcomer services participate in the program for a period of time, ranging from a few months to a year. This program is offered to Spanish-speaking children in self contained classes, located at two elementary schools (Clinton and Hanover Countryside) offering 3-4 and 5-6 grade level clusters. The program provides intensive literacy instruction emphasizing the areas of reading, writing and mathematics. The optimal goal of the program is to accelerate their English acquisition, moving from the entering to the beginning level as defined in the WIDA standards. The instruction develops core academic skills and knowledge necessary to meet the expectations of the grade level.
