6th Grade Curriculum

Social Studies - World History: We will begin our study from ancient times (around 5000 BC) to more recent world history, such as World War II and much more in between.  While studying ancient civilizations, we will analyze the geography of each area, their government, their religion, and how their civilization impacts our world today.  Through projects, students also get a deeper understanding of how people lived.

Science: In science, we will cover each of the four main branches of science - life, earth, physical, and space and technology sciences.  Our science class is a mixture of lecture and lab time. Some days, we may be reading about a topic or theory. Another day, we may be working on an experiment in lab groups.

Reading: In reading, we will be reading novels from a variety of genres. We start the year with an adventure and a memoir. We also read a realistic fiction and mystery novel together as a class. We also review the other genres you have covered in previous years, such as fables and historical fiction. Along with your daily independent reading, you will also be reading current events from the newspapers to turn in reports every 3 weeks. Once a month, there is a book report due as well.

Writing: Our two main focuses in writing this year are persuasive writing and narrative writing. You will be writing various writing pieces to improve on these skills. Along with major writing pieces, we will also be working on grammar skills.

Field Trips

Throughout the year, the 6th grade classes take many field trips:

  • Camp Algonquin
  • Museums (Chicago)
  • Kane County Cougars baseball game
