Mrs. Mueller

   Second Grade 2010-2011

Welcome to  second grade!  I have been a classroom teacher for twenty years, with half of those years being here at Creekside School.  This is an exciting year of growth and development for children.  One way to help ensure a successful school year is to have open communication between home and school.  Please feel free to contact me via email with any questions or concerns you may have throughout the school year.

 Second Grade Curriculum:

Reading:  Comprehension strategies are taught daily in a whole group setting.  We also meet in small groups and individually to work on specific reading strategies to ensure that each child is receiving instruction at his/her reading level.

Writing:  We are using a new writing program called Being a Writer.  We write every day for a variety of purposes.

Social Studies:  The themes of these units are *Family Ties, *Earth, Our Home, *A Working World, *We the People, *Discovering Our Past, and *People, Places, and Holidays

Math: We use Everyday Mathematics.  Please look for a family letter at the beginning of each unit.  In addition, Home Links are sent home with each lesson as homework to be returned the next day.

Student of the Week:  Every child will have the opportunity to bring in photographs to display on our "All About Me" bulletin board.  Forms will be sent home for you to complete with your child prior to his/her turn.  Please send in the forms and photos on the first day of the week your child is being honored.  Check the monthly calendar that is sent home to see if your turn is coming up!

Homework Policy:  All students are required to read twenty minutes a night Monday through Thursday.  Parents are to sign the reading log (found in the assignment notebook) daily.  Students will usually have additional homework, as well.  They  are given ample time each day to write their assignments down in the assignment notebook. When a child is absent, they have the same number of days they were gone to complete all missed work.  Students who do not return homework when due or do not have reading logs signed do not earn a "good day award" for that day.
